Your Blonde Hair Guide

A woman with blonde hair looking to camera.

A blonde bombshell certainly is a striking look, but admittedly can require some maintenance. We are committed to helping you find your perfect shade of blonde and we want it to last the distance. To help you have more fun and get the most out of your blonde locks, here is our blonde hair guide.

Protect Your Blonde Hair from Heat Damage

When hair is lightened the hair cuticle is stripped, making it harder for your hair to hold on to nutrients and more prone to dryness. One of the best steps you can take to preserve your bottle blonde is to protect it from heat. Even if you only blow-dry your hair once a week, that works out as 52 potentially damaging styles a year. We strongly recommend using a heat protectant spray before using a blow-dryer or any heated styling tools such as straighteners or curlers. We love Redken’s Iron Shape - Finishing Thermal Spray. It’s also a good idea to use a lower heat level on any styling tools and let your hair air dry from time to time to give it a heat vacation.

Toning Blonde Hair (At Home and in the Salon)

Toner is a not-so-secret weapon for keeping blondes fresh.

Purple shampoos are a great home toner for cool or ashy blondes, where purple pigments are absorbed by the hair follicle and cancel out any warm yellow tones. This prevents hair from going brassy in colour and helps your colour look fresher for longer. Even warmer, golden or beige blondes can benefit from purple shampoo – we just recommend you use them a little less frequently to get the desired result. We suggest once a week for cool colour tones and once a month for warmer tones.

One of our favourite toning shampoos is Redken Color Extend Blondage – which offers colour management and keeps strands silky soft. In the Ponsonby Hair salon we can create interesting and unique toner colours and can use toner for different effects such as blending so regrowth comes in more naturally. We can also alternate your colour treatments – for example doing foils and toner in one session, and then simply a toner and treatment session at your next appointment to keep your colour spick and span. Another great option is to book a 20 minute hair gloss service with your stylist to cancel out any unwanted colours and maintain your ideal tone.
