Our tips for Getting a Better Haircut

At Ponsonby Hair we’re here to make all your new ‘do dreams come true – so here’s our guide to getting the cut that’s best for you.

Go With A Vision

Whether you’re going to a new stylist or someone you’ve seen for most of your life, inspiration pictures go a long way in communicating the look that you’re after. Arm yourself with a photo, or a collection of photos, to help make sure you and your hairdresser are on the same wavelength. It also helps to talk about why you like the picture – for example you might like the colour, but not the layered cut. So be as specific as possible. It can also be helpful to bring photos of yourself when you loved your hair, and when you didn’t like it so much. If you are more sure of what you want before your appointment, it will be easier to communicate.

Show Don’t Tell

When it comes to haircuts, sometimes it is best to show what you want length-wise rather than to explain it verbally. It’s helpful if you hold up your hands, or find a point where you want your hair to fall, such as your collarbones or shoulders. Photographs are also great for reference.

Be Honest

If you’re not happy with the result of your cut or colour, honesty is the best policy. Most hairdressers will happily re-do your hair if it wasn’t quite what you were hoping for. It’s also helpful next time you go to give feedback about your previous cut or colour – was it what you wanted at the time, did you like how it grew out, etc. And remember to tell them when you love it too! This helps stylists to learn exactly what style you love and adapt it to be even better next time.
