Caring For Your Scalp

The health of our scalps is directly related to the health of our hair. Here is our guide on how to care for your scalp.

Shampooing is a great way to look after your scalp. First, make sure you are using a scalp-friendly shampoo that suits your individual needs, ideally with good oils and less colour and fragrance. Be sure not to over wash your hair, as natural oil production is needed for hair health, and keep water temperature warm rather than hot. When you do shampoo your hair, don’t scrub your scalp but instead massage gently to increase blood flow and circulation. You can also give your hair a quick massage just before washing, to help rinse away any dead skin cells. When conditioning your hair, make sure you focus the product on the ends of your hair, and not the roots and scalp.

How to Soothe Your Scalp

For optimal scalp health it’s really important to hydrate. So drink up! We also suggest you dry your hair gently with a towel (this will help to clear away residual flakes) and use a scalp massaging brush from time to time to encourage blood flow to the area. It is also important to follow a balanced diet including the consumption of healthy fats such as fish and nuts and antioxidants including berries. Some people also find an omega-3 supplement can help improve their skin, hair and scalp health. We also suggest you be kind to your hair and avoid tight or pulling hair styles as they can pull on the hair, contribute to poor scalp health and cause weakness and breakages. And as always, we also suggest you take care in the sun, especially in the summer months, and cover up with a hat to protect your hair and scalp from sun damage.

When To See a Doctor

If you’ve done all the above with no success, we suggest you visit your doctor. They may be able to prescribe a suitable lotion or treatment.
